Design and development of the DietCARE database management system improves nutrition care in clinical settings, highlighting the importance of standardized data.
Background: Despite increased awareness of the role of nutrition in patient care, healthcare systems often lack comprehensive tools for managing patient nutritional data. The growing demand for a nutritional care database management system at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Diet Clinic, driven by rising patient numbers, underscores the need for standardized data storage. This paper outlines the design and development of a system tailored to the clinic's needs. Methods: This study uses design and development research (DDR). The general design of this database structure/design framework will be based on the Nutrition Care Process and Model (NCPM). Results: A web-based nutritional care database management system, known as DietCARE, was developed. It consists of two modules: the Patient Management Module and the Dietitian Module. The systems' parameters are tailored to user needs and the local clinical setting. Conclusions: DietCARE is a context-specific, user-centered platform based on the NCPM, designed to standardize and streamline nutritional care delivery. As the system is currently at the prototype stage, further assessment and testing will be conducted to ensure its effectiveness and suitability for clinical application.
