Personal reflections on Ania Walwicz's essay reveal its impact on psychiatric practice and poetry.
Ania shared this essay with me in 1995 when we first became friends, having been introduced by the writer, Graham Henderson. To my knowledge, the essay has not been published other than in the recent Ania Walwicz Memorial Zine,1 edited by Katherine FitzHywell (with Graham Henderson’s permission to publish his quotes as seen in the essay). When Ania and I met I was a qualified psychiatrist, undertaking child psychiatry training at the University of Melbourne and I want to describe how and why this powerful essay has so influenced my practice, both as a child psychiatrist and poet.
