Case study demonstrates improved clash detection and data-driven management in BIM projects using Power BI.
While Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become standard for clash detection, the subsequent management of clash resolution remains a significant challenge, often relying on inefficient, manual, and opaque processes. This paper explores this gap by detailing a visual analytics framework designed to enhance the data-driven management of the BIM coordination workflow through an exploratory case study of a $38.4M, 47,777 Sq.Ft., mental health facility. The methodology integrates clash data from Autodesk Navisworks with a semi-automated Microsoft Power BI dashboard. The workflow utilizes a cloud-based Common Data Environment (CDE), standardized XML templates for clash tests, and a pre-configured Power BI template to track and visualize coordination performance. The application of the framework resulted in a multi-faceted dashboard that effectively tracked 541 clashes across eight trades, providing quantitative insights into various aspects of the project. The dashboard was used in weekly coordination meetings to improve communication, issue prioritization, and enforce accountability among subcontractors. This study contributes a replicable, data-driven framework for clash management that moves beyond simple detection to active performance monitoring. It demonstrates how transforming raw clash data into visual KPIs provides project teams with actionable insights, improves workflow transparency, and creates a valuable historical dataset for future projects.
