Analysis reveals correlations between cooking time and traits in common bean cultivars, suggesting optimal selections for yield.
This study aimed to evaluate the productive performance, cooking time, and the correlation between these traits of common bean cultivars. The experiment was conducted during the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 harvest seasons at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Curitibanos Campus, Brazil. Five common bean cultivars (BRS FP403, BRS ESTEIO, BRS FS311, BRSMG REALCE, and BRS FC402) were analyzed. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. The following traits were evaluated: plant height (PH), first pod insertion height (PIH), number of pods per plant (NP), number of grains per pod (NGP), hundred-grain weight (HGW), crop cycle (Cy), grain yield (GY), and cooking time (CT). All cultivars were used for GY. The BRS FC402 cultivar had the highest CT (54.44 min). Increasing the HGW of beans reduced the NGP in both harvests. Cultivars with lower PH are recommended for plants with higher PIH in the 2022/2023 harvest, while cultivars with lower NP are recommended for plants with lower Cy. An increase in NP and GY can be expected in the 2023/2024 harvest by recommending cultivars with higher PH.
