Analysis reveals disability policies overlook comprehensive support for children’s wellbeing in neighbourhoods, suggesting opportunities for improvement.
There is increasing momentum for considering the broader social determinants of health, including the neighbourhood, for children with disability. This paper analysed Australian national, state, and territory disability policy documents to understand the extent neighbourhood child liveability domains are considered as levers to support wellbeing and social inclusion for children with disability. Seven of the eight domains defining a liveable neighbourhood for children were considered by at least one, and often multiple, disability policies. However, these were often simplistic and did not capture the multi-sectoral and multi-portfolio approaches required to fully realise the policy intention.
