Comprehensive review reveals geofoam enhances pavement quality by improving compressibility and shear strength.
Geofoam is a lightweight, compressible, and durable material used as a lightweight fill material for various purposes like in road construction over poor soil, road widening, bridge under fill, compensating foundations railway embankment, retaining wall backfill and landscaping. Geofoam is effective for reducing settlement, stabilizing slopes, and minimizing loads on underlying soils due to its properties such as low density, high compressibility, and thermal insulation. When geofoam blocks used as subbase materials along with local materials by applying various strategies, performance of pavement is improved when subjected to traffic loading. Properties of material use for construction of subgrade can be improved by the process such as soil stabilization or soil reinforcement but geofoam blocks can be manufactured according to the need. This paper aims to review the various properties of geofoam considered when used as subgrade material for pavement construction. The objective is also to review the various properties of soil such as compressibility and shear strength improved due to use of geofoam and methodology used to assessed the effectiveness of geofoam.
