Cross-sectional analysis shows COVID-19 worsened sleep quality and TMD symptoms in dental professionals, highlighting stress implications.
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dentistry, focusing on the quality of sleep and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) among dental professionals. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with dentists through an online survey. The questionnaire included demographic data, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality, and the Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI) to evaluate TMD symptoms. Statistical analyses were performed to identify associations between variables. Results: The findings revealed a significant prevalence of poor sleep quality among dentists during the pandemic. A strong correlation was observed between increased stress levels and the severity of TMD symptoms. Participants with higher workloads and greater exposure to COVID-19 reported more severe sleep disturbances and TMD symptoms. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the well-being of dental professionals, leading to a deterioration in sleep quality and an increase in TMD symptoms. These results highlight the need for preventive strategies and mental health support for dentists to mitigate these effects.
