This review examines performance indicators for pulp and paper supply chains, suggesting new KPIs to improve resource efficiency and procurement planning.
One of the major challenges that some pulp and paper mills face, especially when they receive a wide diversity of feedstocks for their manufacturing process, is procurement planning. For the fiber procurement department, the capacity to purchase different types of wood species, the level of fiber freshness, and product forms (short and long logs, chips) are crucial for maintaining process efficiency. For such a context, the use of performance measurement and indicators can play a key role in evaluating and improving the supply performance, especially by quantifying resource efficiency and service effectiveness. This research endeavors to explore and assess the multifaceted dimensions involved in measuring, evaluating, and enhancing the performance of the pulp and paper supply chain. The paper outlines the importance of performance measurement in supply chain management success and offers practical guidelines for designing and implementing metrics. It emphasizes the necessity of considering a broader range of KPIs beyond traditional ones to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of pulp and paper supply chain operations.
