Systematic review maps open innovation's impact on sustainability goals, highlighting collaboration opportunities.
This systematic literature review examines research on the interaction between Open Innovation (OI) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our main objective is to enhance understanding of how OI contributes to achieving the SDGs in different contexts. We map the contexts where this interaction is most prominent, identify the SDGs most frequently impacted by OI practices and present trends and opportunities for future research. This paper systematically reviews 23 research using rigorous and reproducible procedures. Our findings identify fourteen contexts where OI is key in promoting interdisciplinary and inter-organizational collaboration for sustainable innovation. By fostering collaboration with diverse stakeholders, OI enables the development of more effective solutions to face challenges related to the SDGs. We present an analysis highlighting the SDGs most impacted by OI. Notably, five SDGs comprise nearly half of the observed occurrences. This analysis indicates a significant connection between OI and institutions, ecosystems, universities, and government. The analysis revealed several promising avenues for future research and practical application at the interaction of OI and its role in promoting the SDGs. It is a valuable opportunity for research in the Industrial and Systems Engineering knowledge areas. The originality and value of this study lie in opening avenues for future research, highlighting the relevance of OI in line with the 2030 Agenda, and the definition of OI within the context of the SDGs.
