Analysis shows increased modulus of elasticity with diminishing scale, implying significant nanoscale effects in materials.
The influence of the scale factor on the modulus of elasticity determined by instrumental indentation in the elastic and elastoplastic regions of indentation diagrams has been investigated. A considerable increase in the modulus of elasticity during the transition to the micro- and nanoscale indentation was found. The reasons for the influence of the scale factor on the modulus of elasticity determined by instrumental indentation are discussed.
