This project replaces flood-damaged structures with unique reinforced concrete footbridges, suggesting a standardized formwork approach.
This paper presents the design of 4 generic reinforced concrete footbridges in Eupen, Belgium. These footbridges replace structures that were partially or completely destroyed by the devastating floods of July 2021 in the Vesdre basin. The new structures are an arch with variable spans and widths. A single design approach is developed for this project: the use of a unique formwork for the construction of the 8 precast concrete arches. A steel formwork with non-developable warped surfaces and a common reinforcement in stainless steel principle were planned and implemented. Concrete is the only material used. No additional waterproofing or pavement is applied on the upper side.
