Objective: To identify the effects of botulinum toxin type A on the function of spastic upper limbs in adult patients after stroke, according to the Fugl-Meyer Scale. Method: An integrative literature review was conducted, with searches over a 10-year period, in English and Portuguese, in the Virtual Health Library and PubMed databases. Results: Of the 256 articles collected, 7 were considered eligible for this review. The reviewed studies highlight that treatment with botulinum toxin type A, when combined with rehabilitation approaches, results in significant improvements in upper limb function, as assessed by the Fugl-Meyer Scale. The relationship between spasticity and functionality is observed, with decreased spasticity associated with functional improvement. Conclusion: The benefits of botulinum toxin, combined with an individualized and integrated approach, stand out as significant contributions to clinical practice and the development of more effective therapeutic strategies.
