Qualitative analysis reveals ideals of body image and motivations for appearance enhancement in middle-aged women, suggesting tailored marketing strategies.
This study aimed to deeply explore the standards of ideal body image pursued by middle-aged women, their behaviors in pursuing appearance enhancement, their motivations, and their ultimate goals. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 middle-aged women (11 office workers and 5 housewives) aged 40 to 64, and the data were analyzed according to Spradley’s (1980) analysis procedure. The research results showed that, first, middle-aged women perceived a slim body type with a height of 160–165 cm, weight of 50–55 kg, and elastic skin as their ideal image, and were particularly sensitive to abdominal obesity. Second, they showed a tendency toward shame and high body surveillance due to physical changes, and showed differences in appearance management methods depending on the level of objectified body consciousness. Third, the motivation to pursue appearance improvement was divided into internal motivation for health and well-being and external motivation such as maintaining dignity, showing off, and meeting social expectations, and this was interpreted as an expression of complex desires. Fourth, the ultimate goal of appearance enhancement was organized into four types: internal goals such as self-improvement and mood improvement, and external goals such as maintaining youth and securing social trust, and these were closely linked to the degree of body image objectification and motivation. In summary, the above results show that the behavior of middle-aged women seeking to improve their appearance is not simply an external change, but a result of a complex reflection of psychological and social needs. Accordingly, marketing strategies should also be differentiated according to the level of body objectification, and it is expected that internal motivation reinforcement programs centered on health management and external motivation support programs centered on improving social image will be effective. This study has academic and practical significance in that it provides a more three-dimensional understanding of middle-aged women’s appearance behavior and suggests practical social and industrial applications.
