Analysis of addition and subtraction strategies in Korean and international textbooks reveals insights for mathematics education.
Basic facts refer to the ability to perform fundamental operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—quickly and accurately. They play a crucial role in building students' mathematical foundations. This study focuses on addition and subtraction facts, analyzing the Korean curriculum and textbooks, as well as examining the strategies used in mathematics learning materials from other countries. The analysis revealed that Korean textbooks incorporate various strategies for learning basic arithmetic facts, which vary depending on the curriculum. In countries such as the United States, Finland, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, multiple methods, including number charts, are utilized to teach addition and subtraction. Some of these methods are rarely used or entirely absent in Korean textbooks, while others are implemented in different ways. Based on this analysis, this study provides insights into textbook development and instructional design, further contributing to discussions on the learning of basic facts.
