The line x tester design reveals that certain wheat genotypes have superior combining ability, indicating potential for high grain yields.
The mating design line x tester mating system used for the first and second generations of seven Wheat genotypes. The general and specific combining ability estimated, in addition to the performance of the parents and their crosses evaluated by using a random complete block design. The parent Aras showed a significant difference as compared to other genotypes for all studied traits, plant height (90.21cm), number of active tillers (5.11 plant-1), flag leaf area (235.29 cm2), spike length (11.19 cm), weight of 100 grain (42.83 g), grains yield (66.58 g plant -1), Biological yield (332.50 g plant-1) and harvest index (20.10 %) respectively. The hybrid (4×6) of the first and second generation also showed a significant in most studied traits, plant height (92.28 cm) in F1, number of active tiller (9.42&10.35plant) F1 &F2, flag leaf area (255.39 cm2) in F1, spike length (11.95 cm) in F2, weight of 100 grain (43.60 g) in F2, grains yield (88.01 g plant-1) in F2. The general combining ability the parents, Sham 6, Abu Ghraib, and Aras, were significantly superior in most of the F1 and F2 species in most of the studied traits in the desired direction including the grain yield, by (13.01*), (8.75*), in F1and (8.77*) in F2 respectively. As for the specific combining ability, the superior hybrid is (4×6) in the largest number of traits in the first and second generations including the grain yield, which reached to (18.98*) and (14.46*) respectively.
