Study reveals high levels of toxic elements in lipsticks, indicating risks especially in mass market products.
The article presents the results of a study of the toxic elements and heavy metals content in lipsticks. The average content of elements was: Be − 2.2±1.7 mg/kg, Cr − 19±1 mg/kg, Mn − 62±3 mg/kg, Fe − 18386±472 mg/kg, Co − 8.1±1.3 mg/kg, Ni − 57±2 mg/kg, Cu − 5.2±0.7 mg/kg, Zn − 39±1 mg/kg, Cd − 6.1±3.8 mg/kg, As − 2.3±1.2 mg/kg, Pb − 7.6±2.4 mg/kg. The highest content of heavy metals was determined in lipsticks of dark colors, especially black. By price segments, the highest content of heavy metals is determined in mass market lipsticks. Depending on the texture of the lipsticks, the content of the elements is distributed differently. Nickel should not be contained in lipsticks but was found in all samples.
