Analysis assesses CNBB's social communication amid crises, highlighting conservative positions on education and democracy.
The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) is the body responsible for the political action of the Catholic Church in the country. By putting pressure on the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches, its discourse reflects the internal tensions within the religious institution and, in addition, the general Brazilian political context. This article analyzed the episcopate's social communication between 2019 and 2024, a period marked by institutional, political and health crises. The results indicate that the CNBB sought to defend the environment and democracy against coup threats, as well as encouraging the measures recommended by international bodies to control the pandemic. On the other hand, it has maintained conservative positions on issues related to education, children and youth, such as the fight against homophobia in schools and the drug police. This suggests that the religious institution has presented a less closed political stance on the democratic functioning of republican institutions, despite the low variation in certain behavioral guidelines, despite cultural transformations in recent decades.
