Case study explores ICT's role in enhancing self-esteem and autonomous learning in autistic students.
Each person’s ability to complete everyday tasks autonomously, independently and successfully, is a crucial factor in forming his/her perception of his/herself. In numerous cases, Information and Communications Technology (I.C.T.) offers an assistive tool especially to those who find difficulty in completing such tasks effectively. Having this in mind, this particular case study aims firstly to investigate the impact of I.C.T on two children with autistic spectrum disorder and especially in their ability to complete their school work or homework autonomously through the implementation of a simple electronic device (tablet). On a second level, the study aims to further investigate the effect of this particular autonomous ability on the emergence of these students’ self-image and self-esteem. Qualitative data and subsequent findings enforced the initial hypotheses and aims, as both students managed to overcome their difficulties and establish a firm perception and image of themselves.
