Analysis reveals advantages and challenges of D.E.E.S.C. in providing psychosocial support to students, indicating room for improvement.
The present article studies the operation of the Diagnostic Educational Evaluation and Support Committees (D.E.E.S.C.), as a way to provide psychological, social and educational support to students in elementary and secondary school in Greece. This is one among a few assessments that have ever operated on the work of DEESC, which were established almost 7 years ago. Apropos of the assessment for the until today operation of DEESC , there were conducted 20 interviews on members of the commission (s.a. ministers of schools, social workers, psychologists, special education teachers), who are serving in the regional units of Kavala, Drama and Xanthi, and there were investigated through the experience, attitudes and views of the commission’ s personnel the advantages and disadvantages, but also the weaknesses and omissions of DEESC so far. To finalize, there were framed propositions from the member of DEESC in order to achieve the improvement of this institution in the future, occasioned by their personal experience as well as the international featured examples from relevant institutional sectors.
