Pilot survey reveals educators' support for bioethical literacy in primary education, suggesting curriculum development.
This pilot survey is a forerunner of a broader survey that aims to record the opinion of Primary Education (PE) teachers, regarding the promotion of Bioethical Literacy in PE, with the introduction of Bioethics as a teaching subject in Primary School. The research was conducted in Athens, from March 10 to May 10, 2020 and was carried out in the context of checking possible weaknesses of the research tool (questionnaire) before its finalization. For the collection of the sample, the snow-ball sampling method was chosen among active teachers of various specialties in elementary schools. The research meets the conditions of the mixed research method, qualitative and quantitative search (triangulation). The data was collected through an open-ended questionnaire and the obligation of the respondents to freely answer 10 questions concerning the introduction of Bioethics as a teaching subject in PE, while the data was processed using the Content Analysis Method. The majority of them responded positively to the prospect of creating a Bioethics course for PE, expressing thoughts and concerns regarding the implementation of the project. The most important of the findings is the perception of the importance of promoting Bioethical Literacy in PE.
