This analysis highlights the right to learn, choose, and access reading materials under children's rights, suggesting legal enhancements in various contexts.
A Child Rights-based Approach to the Right to Read In this contribution, we briefly revisit the CRC to clarify the current legal framework surrounding the right to read. We focus on three key dimensions frequently highlighted in legal and interpretative documents: (1) the right to learn to read, (2) the freedom to choose what to read, and (3) the right to access reading materials. Alongside a recap of the relevant legal framework, we offer brief reflections on how these three aspects manifest both globally and in the Dutch context. We argue that adopting a children’s rights-based approach to the right to read could provide valuable guidance for addressing these challenges.
