ABSTRACT In this interview, Belova and Warner establish the role of archival metadata within the overall archival endeavor. They then consider the challenges facing archivists working to facilitate useful access to records through the current descriptive modes available, including traditional finding aids, digital representations of documents (encoded metadata, transcripts), and community-engaged or crowdsourced initiatives. They also discuss the possibilities of metadata creation and discovery on a greater scale suggested by artificial intelligence (AI) technology, as well as ethical and professional concerns. They explore examples of metadata initiatives that seek to more ethically or accurately represent marginalized archival subjects, including post-custodial approaches that decouple description and preservation work from physical ownership.
