Analysis highlights hidden gambling harms in probation populations, suggesting improved screening and training for staff.
This article draws upon primary data collected through His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) in England and Wales and reflections from HMPPS Wales Gambling Harms Strategy Group involvement focused on gambling harms training and care-pathway development. We posit that gambling harms are somewhat hidden in probation casework populations, advocating for better screening and associated staff training to identify people experiencing direct and indirect harms, alongside establishing effective criminal justice care pathways. We champion for an organisational culture fully promoting gambling harm recovery for people incarcerated or supervised in the community by probation, and for affected HMPPS staff.
