Observational analysis found an average density of 38.7 individuals/km² in Ratufa indica, suggesting a stable population in Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary.
The study determines the population density status and behavioural observations on the diurnal activity pattern along with food preference of the Indian Giant Squirrel Ratufa indica (Erxleben, 1777)) in Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary, Odisha. The population density estimation of giant squirrels was carried out by the line transect method, and an average density of 38.70 individuals/ km² indicates a good population of the giant squirrels in Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary. The distribution of giant squirrels in various patches of Satkosia WLS, along with their habit and habitats, behaviour, vocalisation, nesting, food and feeding and threats are discussed.
