This article reviews the integration of spirituality in design practices, suggesting a novel framework for designers.
Spirituality is a fundamental dimension of all human cultures, but it has an inversely proportional presence in design cultures. This article seeks to contribute to bridging design and spirituality through four movements: conceptualizing and positioning spirituality within the field of design; reviewing the literature and retrieving ideas and authors who have explored and practiced design at the intersection with or in approximation to spiritual disciplines or practices; retrieving a theoretical-methodological framework previously proposed by the authors; and discussing a case in which this framework was applied. From this framework, we conclude that an authentic and structured approach to spirituality can foster design cultures in which the alignment of different levels of design (ontological, epistemological, methodological, metadesign, and design) emerges through the designers' embodied postures and ways of being.
