The article investigated the essence and features of the innovation ecosystems as key factors for en-suring the sustainable economic growth and increasing region competitiveness in the context of rap-id technological changes. The innovation ecosystem was presented as a complicated, self-organising aggregate of interconnected actors (universities, business, government, society), resources and insti-tutions targeted at generating and commercializing the innovations. The research was particularly focused on the analysis of the differences between the regional innovation system and regional in-novation ecosystem, thereby the flexibility and adaptability of the latter was justified. In the article, the features of forming the regional innovation ecosystem model were studied on the example of the Rostov Region, and a set of diverse measures to ensure the efficient support of this process was proposed.
