Survey reveals poor health and hygiene awareness among sanitary workers in SSWMC, highlighting urgent training needs.
Environmental, health safety and hygiene are important issues to address for the sanitary workers. Therefore, the focus of the study was to assess the health, safety and hygiene issues of the sanitary workers of Sindh solid waste management company (SSWMC). For this purpose, closed ended questionnaire was formulated based on extensive literature survey. The questionnaire survey was distributed to 62 respondents and translated within the local language and among them 60 survey questionnaires were received and analyzed. Demographic section suggested that the higher number of the employees were uneducated and un-married lying within the age limit of 18-30. Most of the sanitary workers were unaware about the environment, health and safety issues. No proper trainings and facilities were provided to them such as first aid and handwashing. In addition, employees were not happy with their provided wages. In conclusion, SSWMC should revised their policies to increase the working efficiency of the sanitary workers.
