The article is devoted to the main directions of state policy in the field of education in the context of the transition to compulsory eight-year education and the introduction of polytechnic education. The article examines the activities of the Ministry of Education of the BSSR to improve the general educational level of the population, the quality of training of workers, scientific and methodological renewal of the educational process taking into account the increase in the practice-oriented component of the content of education. The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the reform, from the stage of its design to practical implementation. Particular attention is paid to the impact of the reform on the content of education and upbringing at school, as well as to identifying the reasons that led to failures. Polytechnic education led to ambiguous consequences: on the one hand, the material and technical base of schools improved, the qualifications of teachers increased, new educational methods were introduced into practice, on the other hand, schoolchildren experienced excessive workload, and industrial training was often formal.
