A 7-month-old heifer with stranguria shows an 11 cm urachal abscess, indicating serious umbilical infections.
A 7‐month‐old, 272 kg Hereford heifer presented to the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine J.T. Vaughn Large Animal Teaching Hospital for evaluation of stranguria. Transabdominal ultrasonography was performed and revealed ventral displacement of the urinary bladder and an 11 cm mixed echogenic mass at the level of the apex of the bladder. Exploratory laparotomy revealed an abscessed urachal remnant, which was removed via exploratory celiotomy. Post‐operative care was managed in the hospital with the use of antibiotics and pain medications. More commonly identified in young calves, this case highlights the range in ages at which disorders of umbilical remnants can present and the importance of early detection of umbilical infections or abnormalities, emphasising potential long‐term consequences.
