Case report shows improvement of dysbiosis caused by Clostridium and Enterococcus in a rabbit, suggesting transfaunation may restore gut health.
The following report presents a case of overgrowth of bacteria of the genus Clostridium spp and Enterococcus spp, and yeasts of the genus Cyniclomyces guttulatus in an adult male rabbit and its treatment with the use of transfaunation of intestinal microbiota. The patient came to the clinic with frequent gastrointestinal disorders such as loss of appetite, abdominal dilation and chronic diarrhea. Transfaunation was carried out using feces from a healthy rabbit in order to restore the intestinal flora of our patient. Additionally, Nystatin was administered orally at a dose of 20 mg/kg for 10 days, to reduce the overpopulation of yeast present in the gastrointestinal tract. It is concluded that transfaunation of fresh cecotrophs from healthy rabbits can provide adequate microflora to help restore cecal homeostasis.
