Qualitative analysis reveals emotional impacts and strained relationships in families coping with youth using nyaope.
Since 2000, the use of nyaope, a harmful psychoactive substance composed of antiretroviral drugs, can-nabis, low-grade heroin, and other additives, has significantly increased in South Africa. This study ex-plored the experiences of family members living with youth who use nyaope in Soshanguve, Gauteng Province. Using a qualitative design and in-depth interviews with purposively selected participants, four key themes emerged: the youth's behaviour, strained family relationships, emotional impacts on family members, and their perceptions of nyaope use. Despite families developing coping strategies and informal interventions, nyaope misuse continues to be a profound mental health and social challenge within af-fected households.
