Assessment reveals significant effects on haematological parameters and toxicity in juveniles African catfish after exposure to bifenthrin insecticide.
The objective of this paper is to evaluate the Effects on haematological parameters and acute toxicity of Bisect (bifenthrin-based insecticide) after exposure to juveniles African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) (Burchell, 1822) using appropriate standard methods. Data obtained reveals that. The mortality of the fish increased with increased concentrations of the pesticide, with the highest mortality (56.67%) observed at 4.36 mg/L and the lowest (13.33%) at 0.87 mg/L. The 96-hour LC₅₀ (3.2 mg/L), shows that Bisect is highly toxic to C. gariepinus. Statistically significant alterations were observed in the studied haematological parameters in the exposed fish compared to the control, with reductions in haemoglobin, packed cell volume, and white blood cells, particularly at higher concentrations. Moreover, alterations in water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen and total dissolved solids were evident and related with increasing concentrations of the toxicant. These results indicates the possibility of environmental hazard posed by bisect contamination in aquatic ecosystems and stress the necessity for regulating the used of synthetic pesticide.
