Observational analysis evaluates flooding susceptibility in three local government areas, suggesting improvements in flood management strategies.
Flooding poses a significant challenge in Benue State, Nigeria, particularly in Makurdi. Consequently, the objective of this paper is to evaluate the selected environmental factors contributing to flooding incidences in Logo, Makurdi, and Guma Local Government Areas (LGAs), Benue State, Nigeria. Utilizing geospatial tools such as Landsat 7 ETM+, Landsat 8-9 OLI/TIRS and Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Findings indicate that Makurdi exhibits the highest drainage density (0.83 km/km²) and very wet soil conditions, increasing its flood susceptibility. A decline in dense vegetation cover from 74.70% in 2001 to 55.74% in 2022 has likely reduced water absorption capacity, exacerbating flood risks. These results highlight the need for integrated flood management strategies addressing both natural and human-induced factors.
