Study reveals how urea concentration and yttrium nitrate ratio influence particle morphology, suggesting essential factors for ceramics fabrication.
The paper studies the effect of urea concentration and yttrium nitrate:urea ratio on the morphology and particle size distribution of yttrium oxide powders synthesized by flame spray pyrolysis. Particles with a median size of 400 to 1300 nm are obtained. Thermodynamic modeling of the precursor combustion reaction is performed, and the stages of decomposition of aqueous solutions of yttrium nitrates with urea and glycine are studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It is found that the type of reducing agent affects the morphology of the particles due to differences in the mechanisms of precursor decomposition. Vacuum sintering of the synthesized powders made it possible to obtain Y2O3 ceramics with a grain size of 8.2 – 9 μm.
