Comparative study shows 3D anatomy software enhances learning outcomes in MBBS students, indicating effectiveness over PowerPoint.
Objective: To compare the academic performance of 1st and 2nd year MBBS students after teaching them by two different teaching modalities that is with 3D Anatomy software and 2D power point presentations in small group demonstrations. Study design: This is a prospective comparative study. Place and duration: Department of Anatomy, Fazaia medical College, Air University, Islamabad, Pakistan, for a period of one year (November 2023 to October 2024). Methodology: A total of 192 students from first and second year MBBS were selected through non-probability convenience sampling. Students from both classes were divided in two groups, of 48 students each. Group A of 1st year was taught topics from gross anatomy of lower limb through small group discussion by using a three-dimensional anatomy software. Group A of 2nd year was taught topics from gross anatomy of head and neck through same process. Group B of both classes were exposed to power point presentations in demonstration. After each session MCQ based assessments was done. Results were compared for both groups and statistical analysis performed. Results: The groups exposed to 3-D software showed better scores as compared to those taught using by power point presentation. Conclusions: 3D visualization technology enhanced students’ learning and retention of human anatomical anatomy as compared to previously used power point presentation.
