Observational analysis demonstrates virtual milling enhances production efficiency with Boolean operations and triangulation techniques.
Introduction: Virtual milling is a computer simulation technology widely used in the manufacturing industry. It aims to simulate and analyze the milling process to enhance process planning and optimize milling operations. The emergence of new digital twin concepts and technologies has promoted the integration of physical and digital virtual manufacturing machines. However, the interactive interface in virtual space is limited in visualizing the physical production process, which hinders improvements in production efficiency. Methods: Related representative patents based on virtual machining and tool sweeping volume construction method—such as simulation of the machining of a workpiece and construction method of workpiece five-axis machining process model—this paper proposes a fast configuration method for tool sweeping volume and a computer numerical control (CNC) milling simulation method based on the Boolean operation of the triangular meshes. The triangular meshes are used to represent the tool sweeping volume and the initial or updated workpiece. Unity engine has good physical simulation characteristics. Developers can use this engine to simulate various physical changes in the real world efficiently and realistically. Results: The feasibility of virtual milling is verified by building a three-axis milling virtual machining platform in Unity. Discussion: Virtual milling replaces physical processing experiments, changing the traditional trial- and-error manufacturing process, which has become a key enabling technology to promote the development of intelligent manufacturing. Conclusion: Experiments demonstrate that milling in virtual space can be achieved using the Boolean operation of the triangular meshes.
