Prospective observational study shows increased cesarean and NICU rates in pregnancies with oligohydramnios, highlighting urgent need for monitoring.
This prospective observational study investigates the impact of oligohydramnios (AFI < 5 cm) on maternal and neonatal outcomes in 200 singleton pregnancies ≥ 34 weeks at a tertiary care centre. Using Phelan's four-quadrant technique, we assessed amniotic fluid index (AFI), Doppler parameters, delivery mode, and neonatal morbidity and mortality. High cesarean section rates (47%), NICU admissions (36%), congenital anomalies (9%), and perinatal mortality (15%) were observed. Maternal hypertension (21%) and post-dated pregnancies (17%) were common risk factors. Our findings highlight the need for rigorous antenatal surveillance and timely obstetric interventions to improve perinatal health in oligohydramnios.
