Qualitative research shows defence diplomacy improves bilateral cooperation in Australia and China, suggesting potential for mutual security enhancement.
In recent years, economic interdependence has deepened between Australia and China. The concomitant emergence of security issues in this relationship has given rise to asymmetry between established trade relations and underdeveloped defence relations. Through qualitative empirical research of Australia’s use of defence diplomacy, this paper aims to demonstrate the efficacy of defence diplomacy for enhancing bilateral defence cooperation. Contemporary developments in Australia-China defence diplomacy have improved force interoperability and affirmed mutual security interests. When implemented with relevance to the strategic goals of the two states, defence diplomacy holds significant potential for the evolution of the Australia-China security relationship.
