Qualitative study analyzes zakat's alignment with sustainable development goals in Malaysia, indicating its potential benefits for social and economic growth.
The Zakat, Sadaqah and Waqf Division (ZAWAF) is one of the Pusat Tanggungjawab (PTJ) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) which is responsible for managing the collection and distribution of zakat in UiTM. It started since 1998 with the appointment of UiTM as Assistant Amil at the higher education institute by the Selangor Zakat Board. In order to ensure that the roles and responsibilities that have been entrusted are carried out in the best possible way, the management of ZAWAF needs to ensure that the management of zakat collection and distribution at UiTM is in line with certain objectives that have been set in the al-Quran and al-Hadith. Recently, the United Nations (UN) has outlined the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which include social, economic, and environmental elements. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to outline the objectives of zakat and analyse the relationship between zakat and the SDGs. This qualitative study was carried out using data collection and data analysis methods. The data collection method is done through library research. The data obtained was analysed based on inductive, deductive, and comparative methods to obtain the results of the study. The results of the analysis have outlined the objectives of zakat from various perspectives including in the context of religion, zakat payers, zakat recipients, and national, economic, and social development. Analysis of the objective of zakat assistance shows that it is in line with the implementation of the SDGs that have been outlined.
