Analysis reveals cultural policy impacts on dance in Mexico, suggesting a democratic-participatory model.
This paper analyzes cultural policy in Mexico by reviewing the sociopolitical makeup of its cultural institutions. Through the analysis of the field of the dance, we argue that the Mexican cultural policy has developed based on two models: the statist-popular model and the neoliberal-competitive model. These models present elements that have enabled the development and consolidation of this artistic field; however, they have also represented an obstacle to adequately drive the possibilities of democratizing resources and promoting the participation of increasingly diverse groups. The analysis of these models provides a look at the current institutional composition and the proposal for a third model, the democratic-participatory model, which we consider could be adequate for the consolidation and continuity of the institutional transformation of the country.
