Indigenous music in Nigeria is of great importance because it forms the essential part of the cultural heritage of diverse Nigerian communities. Through music, these communities express their interests, beliefs, norms and values. Since modern influences tend to threaten the indigenous music including that of the Oshimili people, this paper therefore provides insights into the evolving natureof these traditions in response to contemporary influences. Relying on ethnographic method of data collection, this study employed oral interviews involving the culture carriers and interlocutors which was complemented with related literature from libraries and the internet. A total of thirty- five persons were interviewed and they include twenty (20) males and fifteen (15) females. Findings reveal that the educational roles of indigenous music has helped communities learn about their histories, cultural perspectives and practices. Itunderscores how musical activities promote social interaction and perpetuate cultural norms and values as a means of preserving Oshimili cultural heritage. In conclusion, this research contributes to the existing knowledge on indigenous music in contemporary Nigeria. It highlights the cultural significance of indigenous music and its role in traditional ceremonies, emphasizing how it fosters community cohesion and preserves cultural identities in a rapidly evolving society.
