Randomized block design assessed yield potential in rice landraces, highlighting their genetic variability.
Rice landrace is a genetic resource that can be used to develop superior cultivars. Estimation of genetic parameters and phenotypic appearance of rice landrace is important in selection programs in rice breeding. The purpose of this research was to select rice landrace with high yield potential through the assessment of variability, heritability, and phenotypic performance. The method used in this research was a randomized block design. The experiment was repeated 3 times with 2 units. The genetic material used included 8 local accessions namely Widas, Buleud, Sumatra, Pandanwangi I, Bandawati, MSP, Ulung, Pandanwangi II, and 2 commercial varieties as the check varieties, namely IR64 and Inpari 42. The results showed that there was wide variability of genetics in the characters of plant height, flowering time, and number of grain hills, while a wide variability of phenotypic was found in the characters of leaf blade length, plant height, flowering time, number of panicles per hill, and number of grains per hill. Heritability was high in plant height, flowering time, and number of grains per hill. Pandanwangi II, Ulung, and Widas had high-yield potential in almost every character tested.
