Observation trial identified 36 doubled haploid lines with improved agronomic performance, suggesting potential for abiotic stress tolerance.
Observation trial is one of the stages of the rice breeding program in an effort to develop new superior varieties of rice. The aim of this study was to obtain doubled haploid lines from anther culture that had high yield and good agronomic performance at optimum conditions. The materials used were 76 doubled haploid lines from anther culture and 4 check varieties (Ciherang, Inpari 30 Ciherang Sub 1 , Limboto, and Inpari 35 Agritan). The experiment used an augmented design in a completely randomized block design (CRBD) with 5 blocks. Based on index analysis a positive value, 36 doubled haploid lines were selected which had the characteristics of plant height (89.3-142.3 cm), number of productive tillers (11.1-17.5), flowering days (72.4-88.0 DAS), panicle length (23.4-30.9 cm), flag leaf length (20.5-46.6 cm), panicle weight (2.9-9.6 g), number of filled grains per panicle (40.0-156.6 grains), number of empty grains per panicle (10.2-84.0 grains), percentage of filled grain per panicle (39.3-89.7 %), weight of 1000 grains (24.5-28.7 g), and grain yield (3.9-7.3 t/ha). These selected lines have the potential to be tested further in other irrigation field, and to be tested in a sub-optimum environment.
