Assessment reveals sound barrier effectiveness differences in energy projects under revised ISO 9613-2, indicating potential compliance challenges.
The Internation Standard ISO 9613-2 method for attenuation of sound during propagation outdoors part 2 was revised in 2024. The previous version was in use for twenty-eight years beginning in 1996. Changes implemented in the 2024 revision result in significant reductions to calculated effectiveness of sound barriers. Typical ground level sound sources associated with energy projects were modeled using CadnaA for a variety of cases to compare the effectiveness of sound barriers using the 1996 and 2024 versions of ISO 9613-2. Sound barrier heights necessary to achieve compliance with a regulatory standard were compared. In some cases, the changes to this standard can be the difference between a buildable project and one that cannot be mitigated in a cost-effective manner.
