Observational analysis demonstrates reduced recurrence in ameloblastoma after topical application of 5-FU, indicating a novel treatment approach.
The primary treatment for ameloblastoma is curettage or marsupialization, with a relatively high recurrence. Presently, the authors demonstrate the potential efficacy of topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) as a promising treatment modality for ameloblastoma after curettage in 4 cases. Transmission electron microscopy of 5-FU–treated ameloblastoma tissue showed apoptosis within cells. Topical application of 5-FU after curettage efficiently treats ameloblastoma without recurrence within 2 years.
