Numerical investigation reveals gap resonance influences fluid dynamics between twin fixed barges, suggesting key implications for offshore applications.
Gap resonance becomes important in various offshore applications when fluid motion in a confined space or gap between structures can impact the system dynamics. Sloshing mode gap resonance is an overlooked aspect when dealing with this phenomenon. Unlike piston mode gap resonance, which occurs in narrow gaps due to fluid oscillation, sloshing mode typically arises in wide gaps between structures characterized by standing wave patterns. A two-dimensional potential theory based fully nonlinear numerical wave tank is employed to conduct a numerical investigation into sloshing gap resonance between two identical fixed barges. Uniform current effects on the twin barges and the elevation in the gap between them in the presence of regular and irregular waves are the highlights of this paper. The sloshing gap resonance phenomenon is investigated for wave parameters such as the wave steepness and direction of current.
