Implication
Automated irrigation improves yield and resource efficiency in Malling Ace strawberries, suggesting benefits for sustainable farming practices.
Key Points
- Class 1 berry yields in RDI treatments were reduced by 30–36% compared to well-watered plants, indicating significant impacts of irrigation levels.
- While RDI treatments led to lower berry fresh weight and fewer Class 1 berries, berry soluble solids content remained unchanged throughout the experiments.
- An automated sensor-based fertigation system effectively managed water and nutrient availability, optimizing conditions in the total controlled environment agriculture for strawberries.
- Under split photoperiod conditions, RDI treatments resulted in higher resource use efficiency without compromising berry quality attributes.
