Experimental findings demonstrate reduced costs and environmental impact for automotive trim using sustainable materials.
Aesthetics greatly influence consumer decisions in many industries including automotive. High-gloss, visually striking surfaces are traditionally achieved through conventional painting processes. However painting process is costly, environmentally harmful, and time-intensive due to volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and complex production steps. This paper is going to discuss sustainable alternatives by exploring modified plastics E.g., Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) for decorative automotive components like bezels, interior trim and pillar appliques. The research deals with modified PC & ABS materials specifically created for thin-wall (1.5-3 mm) injection molding components. These components must meet strict functional requirements such as dynamic load conditions and at the same time maintain aesthetically superior look under harsh conditions. Virtual engineering simulations were conducted to validate structural durability, while scratch testing & UV testing were conducted to test for optimal aesthetic performance. The experimental findings showed a 35% decrease in costs and a 25% reduction in carbon footprint. The PC & ABS materials not only fulfilled but surpassed the aesthetic and functional benchmarks established for painted surfaces. Their performance was notably superior regarding durability, resistance to scratches, and resilience against weathering conditions. Furthermore, they exhibited enhanced surface quality, stability under severe temperature fluctuations, while also providing savings in both weight and cost. Moreover, the elimination of VOC emissions yielded significant advantages for the environment. The findings of the research conclude that such sustainable alternatives are possible and beneficial, with great cost savings and environmental advantages, while maintaining the raised aesthetic standards and structural integrity requirements to be adopted for automotive use. Thereby, these findings can be applicable to other industrial sectors such as consumer electronics and medical technology, among others Keywords— Mold-in-Color (MIC), Polycarbonate (PC), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Automotive Trim, Sustainable Manufacturing, VOC Emissions, High-Gloss Finishes, Injection Molding, Material Testing, Thermal Aging, Cold Impact Resistance, Gloss Retention, Scratch Resistance, UV Weathering, Cost Reduction, Carbon Footprint
