Empirical analysis shows digital government boosts employment quality in residents, highlighting policy importance.
Based on sample data from 297 cities above the prefecture level in China from 2018 to 2022, this paper empirically analyzes the impact and mechanism of digital government construction on residents' employment quality using a panel fixed-effects model. The research finds that digital government construction positively promotes residents' employment quality. The digital government indirectly affects employment quality through the business environment and urban innovation capabilities. In the year heterogeneity test, this study observes that the positive impact of digital government construction on residents' employment quality becomes particularly significant after 2019. This finding indicates that the degree of policy attention has a positive effect on its efficacy. In central and eastern cities, the direct effect of the digital government on employment quality seems relatively limited. In contrast, in western cities, the construction of the digital government has been proven to significantly improve residents' employment quality, suggesting that the marginal effect of digital government construction is more pronounced in these areas.
