The proposed model improves target selection accuracy for coalbed methane under complex geological conditions, revealing its benefits over traditional methods.
Summary Coalbed methane (CBM) target selection is the prerequisite and foundation of CBM exploration and development. However, the conventional model of CBM target selection is based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation, which introduces uncertainties due to the necessity of parameter weighting. In this study, we propose a novel model of CBM target selection based on the fuzzy pattern recognition theory. The two models are applied to select the evaluation levels of two target areas in Baode Coal Mine. The results indicate that Target Areas 1 and 2 are classified as Level II by the AHP-fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model. In contrast, the proposed fuzzy pattern recognition model achieved more precise evaluations, classifying Target Area 1 as Level II and Target Area 2 as Level I. Compared with the traditional AHP-fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model, the proposed fuzzy pattern recognition model features a simplified operational process without requiring parameter weighting. Therefore, the fuzzy pattern recognition model avoids the uncertainty impact of subjective weighting and more effectively distinguishes the evaluation level of CBM target selection under complex geological conditions. We propose an improved model of CBM target selection under complex geological conditions, providing a scientific basis and method reference on the decision-making of target selection for CBM and other unconventional natural gas reservoirs exploration and development.
